Keeping backups of Windows 10 is a good thing, as you can restore system files when it stops working, but the downside of that is to run backup files for large storage space in your hard drive over time.

How can you delete backup files in Windows 10?

How to delete a Windows file registry:

Windows 10 provides much better ways to backup regular files than older versions of Windows, thanks to the built-in file backup system using Windows File History, where copies of files in folders are kept regularly.

But that leads to a significant increase in the storage capacity used over time, so if you want to delete backup files in Windows 10 then deleting backup copies of the Windows file registry should be the first task in your list.

Go to the menu (Settings) in Windows 10.
Click on (Update & Security).
Click Backup.
Click on More Options.

  • Here, you can change the number of times file backups were created and the number of times they were saved before they were deleted.
  • To completely disable these settings, press Stop using this drive in the list of backup options. This will remove the Windows registry backup drive, thereby completely disabling the feature.

How to free up storage after Windows 10 update:

If you want to free up storage after any major Windows 10 update, you should start by deleting the folder (Windows.old) as this folder is automatically created as a backup copy of the older Windows installation when performing a major OS update.

You don't need to worry about deleting this folder, in most cases, Windows will remove it automatically a month after updating, but if you want to remove it early to recover more storage faster, you can do that through the following steps:

  • To delete the Windows. old folder, you will need to run the Disk Cleanup Tool by pressing the Windows + R buttons and typing: cleanmgr, then clicking OK to run it.

  • In the Disk Cleanup window, click on the Clean up system files option to display the options for scanning system files.
  • In the list of files to be deleted, be sure to select Previous windows installation to provide additional storage.
  • Click OK to start the deletion process.
