Introduction

A classic chocolate cake is a timeless dessert that combines rich cocoa flavor with a moist, tender crumb. Perfect for birthdays, celebrations, or any occasion, this homemade version delivers bakery-quality results with simple ingredients and easy steps.

Ingredients

For the Cake
  • 1¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1½ teaspoons baking powder
  • 1½ teaspoons baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water or hot coffee

For the Chocolate Frosting
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  •  cups powdered sugar
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • ¼ cup heavy cream or milk

Instructions

1. Prepare the Oven and Pans

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans or line them with parchment paper.

2. Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.

3. Combine Wet Ingredients

In another bowl, beat together sugar, eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla extract until smooth.

4. Combine and Add Hot Liquid

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until just combined. Slowly pour in the boiling water or hot coffee, stirring until the batter is smooth and slightly thin.

5. Bake

Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans. Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Cool the cakes in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

6. Make the Frosting

In a large bowl, beat the butter until creamy. Add powdered sugar, cocoa powder, and salt. Mix on low speed until combined, then add vanilla and cream. Beat on high speed for 2–3 minutes until light and fluffy.

7. Assemble the Cake

Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of frosting on top. Add the second cake layer and frost the top and sides evenly.

Tips

  • Use hot coffee instead of water to enhance the chocolate flavor.
  • Ensure cakes are completely cool before frosting to prevent melting.
  • For extra richness, add a layer of chocolate ganache between the cakes.

Variations

  • Add chocolate chips to the batter for a fudgier texture.
  • Substitute half the cocoa powder with melted dark chocolate for a deeper flavor.
  • Top with fresh berries or a dusting of powdered sugar for decoration.

Conclusion

This homemade classic chocolate cake offers a perfect balance of moist texture and deep chocolate flavor. With its rich frosting and simple preparation, it’s a dessert that never fails to impress.
